How Alkaline Water Is Saving Firefighters

A National Center for Biotechnology Information study highlights heart attack due to dehydration as a leading cause of death among firefighters exposed to extreme temperatures during firefights. Notably, you face a 12 to 136 times higher risk of dying from a heart attack while struggling to put out raging flames.

The good news is that alkaline water with a pH of 9 proves to be an effective means of fighting the extreme dehydration that can cause fatalities.

What Is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is a type of water that has been ionized. Typically, this type of water has a higher pH compared to regular drinking water used at home. Where normal drinking water has a neutral pH of 7, alkaline water boasts a pH of 8 or 9, or even 10. Alkaline water also has alkaline minerals and negative oxidation potential.

How Alkaline Water Helps Firefighters

Here are ways alkaline water benefits firefighters:

  • Provides faster hydration: Alkaline water typically offers better and quicker hydration than the other types of water. A study published by the National Institutes of Health revealed that the firefighters who drank alkaline water experienced full rehydration in less time than those who drank regular water under the same test conditions. Ideally, the pyloric valve in your stomach responds faster to higher pH levels in ionized alkaline water by opening faster to enable the water to be transported quickly throughout your body.
  • Improves immunity: Alkaline water also boosts your body's immunity. It helps neutralize your body's acidity caused by poor diet, stress, and environmental toxins typical of fire environments.
  • Strength and stability: Firefighting involves a lot of movement and other strenuous activities, and alkaline water contains several minerals, most importantly potassium and sodium.

Where Is Alkaline Water Sourced?

Natural alkaline water can occur when water picks up minerals from mineral-rich areas found in springs as it passes over rocks. Alkaline water is also manufactured and packaged by water companies or in supplement form such as pH booster drops. The bottled waters and supplements are then sold in supermarkets, stores, or through online retailers.
